Fate Made Me a Househusband: A Father’s Day Special

by: Mike Mountain

As I have reported earlier, certain circumstances in my life have prevented me from working full time outside of the house. As a result, I now stay at home and take care of our four-year-old son.

I no longer find this new position to be a step down in life, but a positive step forward. My son doesn’t have to go to daycare…ever. I take him to preschool in the morning and the park on nice afternoons. In the fall he’ll start Kindergarten, and I know he’ll love it. I am contributing in a positive way to my sons’ well being, and that is satisfying in itself.

I’m a little bit tired all the time and recently I found out why. As a result of fighting off leukemia with radiation and chemotherapy, I now have permanent kidney damage. Being tired is a common result of this. I’m not, however, too tired to care for my son and take care of the duties it takes to run a house, so these will remain my focus.

My wife continues to thrive in her new position as a Legal Secretary, and she is the main breadwinner in this house. I’m cool with that. I don’t have a choice. I’m kind of getting used to hanging around the house with my boy, and he is happy to have my at home with him. We’re pals.

I now have to cut down on my fast food intake to spare my kidneys the extra hard work, but that will probably be good for my family and me. We’ll work together to eat healthier. We’re a team.

Happy Father’s Day to me.
